Rhyme Schemes

A rhyme scheme is the pattern of the rhymes used in a line, verse or song. It is usually referred to using letters that indicate which lines rhyme with each other, e.g., ABAB, AABB, AAAA.

Rhyme schemes help to create a flow in the music that makes lyrics catchy and easier to remember. They guide listeners through the song with a clear structure.

Artists sometimes break the pattern or bend the rules a little. You’ll find its usually signals a transition or a punchline. Listen to FEAR – Kendrick Lamar for a great example of pattern use and breaking the pattern.
