Repitition & Alliteration
Repetition is when a word, phrase or structure is intentionally repeated for emphasis, emotion, or to build rhythm. Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound at the beginning of words that are close together. They are all about sound and rhythm.
These techniques make lyrics stick in your head – they’re super easy to remember and almost give verses a hypnotic quality. They can really emphasise a message or idea and control momentum within the verse.
You might not catch the meaning right away, but that’s part of the fun. Don’t you love the feeling of understanding a clever bar?!
- Words showing up in the same position across verse lines
- Words that start with the same letter or sound
- Catchy or rhythmic moments in the lyrics
- Phrases that feel like a hook, even thought they’re not in the chorus
Metaphors sometimes stretch across multiple lines, like they’re building part of a story.
- It sounds best when it’s thought through and intentional, not flippantly overused
- Alliteration isn’t just about the same letter, it’s the same sound
- The technique supports the content, not overtakes it
- E-40 – inventive wordplay and repeated syllables that create a signature flow
- Eminem – repetition for both comedic and emphatic effect
